Superman Legacy: Release Date, Cast, Trailer, Plot and Everything We Know So Far

When you hear the word “superhero,” chances are the first name that comes to mind is “Superman.” The story of the red-capped protector of Metropolis from the planet Krypton is well-known to both die-hard and casual fans of DC Comics, and a big reason for his popularity is that he has been in movies for a long time. Starting with Richard Donner’s Superman, which came out in 1978. The iconic version of the character may be a little old-fashioned and corny. However, Christopher Reeve’s charming personality and the film’s lighthearted tone have made it a true classic that has led to three sequels and a 1984 spin-off called Supergirl.

Superman Legacy

Even though it’s technically four sequels, Superman Returns (2006) was a continuation of the Donner movies and ignored Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). Even though Superman Returns wasn’t terrible, it didn’t do as well as expected at the box office and couldn’t match the magic of the first two movies. Still, even the reaction to that movie was nothing compared to how people felt about Man of Steel (2013), the most divisive and controversial Superman movie. Fans of the movie liked how Henry Cavill gave the character a more realistic feel and thought the action scenes were beautiful. But the movie’s critics thought that its melodramatic tone missed the point of Superman and that its wanton destruction was just violence for violence’s sake. When Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017) were not well received, things needed to improve for Superman in the DC Extended Universe.

Since then, the future of Superman in movies has been up in the air. Who knows how long Man of Steel 2 was stuck in development hell, and rumors of a possible reboot with Michael B. Jordan never came true. Now that James Gunn and Peter Safran are the new CEOs of DC Studios, they are making a new plan for a connected DC Cinematic Universe. It doesn’t surprise that this plan includes a new version of Superman. Superman: Legacy is the latest movie starring Clark Kent. It is the start of DC’s new generation and the first part of what Gunn has called the “Gods and Monsters” phase.

Now that the movie is getting ready to be made, it’s time to find out what Big Blue’s next big adventure will be. Here’s what we know about Superman: Legacy so far.

Who is in The Superman Legacy Cast?

Auditions for the role of Superman are currently taking place, with several actors being considered. David Corenswet, Pierson Fodé, and Nicholas Hoult have met with DC Studios for the role of Clark Kent, with Hoult also possibly being considered for the role of Lex Luthor. Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan, Phoebe Dynevor, and Samara Weaving have all auditioned for the role of Lois Lane. Director James Gunn has expressed his desire for the new Superman actor to possess both the humanity and alien qualities of the character, as well as kindness and compassion. He believes that the previous actors who have played Superman were good, and now it is time to add to the story.

When is The Superman Legacy Release Date?

During James Gunn’s speech, it was announced that a new version of Superman would appear in theaters on Friday, July 11th, 2025. This date falls just one week after the Fourth of July, fitting for a hero whose slogan has traditionally been “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” (even though Canadian authors created Superman, it doesn’t hurt to show a little patriotism).

Is there a trailer for The Superman Legacy?

We have yet to see a trailer for Superman: Legacy, and it may take a while before we do. This is because the actor who will play Superman has yet to be announced. What is The Superman Legacy Plot?

The upcoming film Superman: Legacy has left fans eager to learn more about the plot and characters that will be featured. This means we can expect to see Superman already established as a superhero with experience. However, there may be flashbacks to Clark Kent’s life before he became Superman, offering insight into his character development.

While it’s uncertain whether Lois Lane will be included in the film, we know that Jimmy Olson, her colleague, will appear. As for the supporting cast and villains, the details are still unknown. Given that this is a new version of Superman, we may see a new villain added to the mix. Characters such as Mongul or Bizzaro are potential candidates. Additionally, Brainiac, a popular villain in the DC Universe, has never been featured in a live-action movie. As such, we may finally see him included in the film. Lastly, we may see the return of old favorites such as Lex Luthor and General Zod, either in person or through mention.

In a series of tweets, Gunn talked about how much he liked the script and how he ended up directing the film himself.

Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude. But, the long and the short of it is, I love this script, and I’m incredibly excited as we begin this journey. #UpUpAndAway
