Switching from Android to iPhone shows what my friends really think

Now that I have FaceTime, I have friends who suddenly want to the video call.

When I chose at the beginning of questsummer of switch for i phone from using a Android phone, I didn’t think it would matter much. I have been using Android on my phone for years, doing use of the many non-Apple services that are out there for text and video chat friends and family. While I was aware of my own new Phone purchase would provide access to iMessage And FaceTime, I considered it just a perk of have an iOS device. After all, Apple’s services like Apple arcade And Apple Music they are often advertised as i best or in exclusive to Apple products, but each one of they have rivals that work on both iOS and Android. Surely, I thought, we were going to move past if someone was a “green bubble” or a “blue bubble” in a text message. But then after I started using my new iPhone, the following messages started to arrive in from several friends:

iMessage is nice, but it shouldn’t be vital.

“I’m so glad you’re blue now !!!”

“Bienvenue à la Club Apple!”

“It’s almost time.”

These are all real claims, via SMS or in person, who friends are made aware of my switch they told me … and I just don’t understand why.

Yes, iMessage is convenient. Yes, so is FaceTime. While I personally have decided to buy a iPhone 12 Pro Max for the redesign And app privacy controls in iOS 14.5, I didn’t expect it to make a difference for anyone in my social circle. Above all I didn’t expect it to matter to the point of showing quite intense relief and jubilation.

During last three years using Android on a Moto Z2 Play it’s a Pixel 3 XL, the same friends simply “met” myself on other services. Lot of use Whatsapp for sms. Google Duo it’s mine favorite way to video chat – and frankly already includes many of the new improvements in I’m coming to FaceTime this fall in iOS 15 such as invite link, Portrait mode and chat inside of any web browser. A combination of Microsoft’s Facebook Messenger and Skype affect most other contacts who I’m not in WhatsApp or Duo. And also a recent group chat that was struggling on MMS moved over to Instagram. (Alas: I wish more people I had access for RCS messages….)

Despite the clear comfort people to have for these non-Apple services, in weeks leading in my device exchange several of my friends told me that plans to quit those other services once you switch to iOS.

“You are the only one I speak to on WhatsApp, “confessed a close friend from college who in previously told me it was super cheap.

Two friends with whom I speak mainly on Facebook Messenger told me about their excitement for moving our chat on iMessage, and then I realized one of they never even gave me their phone number.

WhatsApp signal and messaging

Signal and WhatsApp both offer encrypted messages, whether you are or not use an iPhone.

And another friend rarely had any interest in make videochat with when I used Android, but now that they can use FaceTime, I get unsolicited calls.

My family members, kindly, don’t care if I am or not using an iPhone. While I know using FaceTime is a preference for they, one the thing was more important: does it? work? So at least with them, video chat over WhatsApp and Skype are still viable.

Even Apple is starting to recognize that to facilitate a fast and easy conversation, no matter what device people are on Is the most important thing. FaceTime opening up a little to include participants on Android, Windows and everywhere web browser loading is a half-step: Ideally at startup it will enable iOS people to include anyone they want in a conversation, but in reality by starting a FaceTime call it seems remain exclusive to Apple devices. In an interview with UrAvgConsumer, the vice president senior Apple’s Craig Federighi acknowledged that openness up FaceTime has become what its customers are want.

“Very often there was someone in a great group who maybe he didn’t have an apple device and you not want for shut their out of the party, yet we didn’t want must use something other than FaceTime and so we thought as an Apple customer, what do you do? want, you do want to be in able to pull in Everyone of your friends, “Federighi said in the interview with the YouTube channel.

And while this is great, his also on being competitive. Apple knows if it doesn’t catch up with rival services like Enlarge, even the most loyal Apple customers may decline services like FaceTime.

How for I, doing the switch not much has changed. I still communicate with everyone in my life. IS just what now why of my “blue bubble”, it’s a little easier for my friends and family who prefer using an iPhone.

what’s your favorite app for sms and video chat? And is it particularly important? for your friends and family for use iMessage or FaceTime? To tell us in comments.
