Your phone goes with you everywhere, and so does your driver’s license. Now, in select states, you can store your license right on your iPhone, within Apple Wallet, alongside boarding passes and concert tickets. This new feature makes everyday tasks smoother and more efficient.
Imagine swiping your ID and boarding pass back to back at TSA checkpoints, enhancing your security check experience. While we’re seeing initial rollouts, a widespread adoption of digital IDs might just redefine how we present IDs at various locations.
This process is gradual, as not all states are fully equipped with digital ID systems yet. Below, we cover the states that currently support digital IDs via Apple Wallet, how to add one to your device, and what exciting features are coming with the anticipated release of iOS 26 this fall.
States That Support Digital ID in Apple Wallet
Currently, only a limited number of states allow digital IDs in Apple Wallet. Notably, states like Louisiana, New York, Utah, and Virginia support mobile driver’s licenses but require separate apps for ID presentation.
Here’s a list of states and regions that support digital IDs in Apple Wallet:
- Arizona
- California
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Hawaii
- Iowa
- Maryland
- New Mexico
- Ohio
- Puerto Rico
Interestingly, while some states were initially announced as partners for Apple’s digital ID, they haven’t fully implemented the system yet. Right now, the TSA permits digital IDs from Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, and state apps in a total of 15 states.
How to Add Your Driver’s License to Apple Wallet
If you’re in a state that supports this feature, adding your ID to Apple Wallet is straightforward. Just remember, there’s a verification step that might take a little time but is easy to follow.
- Open Apple Wallet
- Tap the Add button
- Select Driver’s License or ID and choose your state
- If applicable, decide if you want to add your ID to your iPhone only or both your iPhone and Apple Watch
- Follow the prompts to scan your ID
(Ensure you scan your ID in well-lit conditions with a clear image.)
Once scanned, you’ll need to verify your identity with a selfie. Apple might require you to perform some facial movements for this step. For a smooth verification experience, consider these tips:
- Stand against a plain background with neutral colors
- Be in a well-lit space, preferably indoors
- Remove any accessories that could obscure your face
- Hold your iPhone steadily while taking the selfie
After completing these steps, confirm your identity using Touch or Face ID. Your biometrics will be linked to your ID, ensuring it’s secure and accessible only to you.
Transferring Your ID to a New iPhone
If you upgrade your iPhone, transferring your ID is a breeze:
- During the initial setup, tap Wallet
- Select your ID
- Follow the instructions
- Confirm your decision to move your ID to the new device
Create a Digital Passport in Apple Wallet
While states are gradually rolling out digital ID systems, Apple is also branching into new territories. Coming with iOS 26 later this year, users will have the option to create a digital passport in Apple Wallet.
This feature allows iPhone users to scan their passports and store a digital version for domestic travel. While it won’t replace your physical passport and is not valid for international travel, it should be functional at over 250 TSA checkpoints.
During a recent keynote at WWDC, Apple noted that the passport digital ID could be used “in apps and in person,†although specifics remain under wraps. This aligns with similar capabilities offered on Android devices through Google Wallet.
Verify with Wallet for Seamless Age Verification
In addition to digital IDs, another exciting feature is headed to iPhones: Verify with Wallet. This makes age verification simpler during transactions, like ordering a bottle of wine through Uber Eats. Instead of showing your ID to the delivery driver, your stored digital ID will handle age verification.
Supported by Chime, Turo, Uber Eats, and U.S. Bank, this feature could streamline various purchases. However, it could get complicated if someone else receives the delivery.
