As of now, about half the states that the TSA accepts for digital identification are compatible with Apple Wallet, including platforms like Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet among others.
iPhone Requirements for Apple Wallet ID
To get started, it’s crucial to have the right iPhone model along with compatible software:
- An iPhone 8 or later with the latest version of iOS
- Face ID or Touch ID enabled
- Two-factor authentication set up on your Apple account
- A driver’s license or ID from a participating state or territory
- Your device’s region set to the United States

My Easy Experience Adding ID
I tested the process using an iPhone 16E.
Adding my ID was seamless; I scanned both the front and back of my license and then verified my identity. Surprisingly, the setup was user-friendly—just a quick live photo of my face took about 2.5 seconds.
Following that initial step, more verification was necessary, which involved a series of prompts asking me to perform different facial movements. This engaged process lasted roughly three minutes. It did take longer for me because I got a bit distracted and had to restart.
After uploading the necessary photos, I awaited ID confirmation from the California DMV. A quick notification arrived – my ID was ready for use, and the whole process took less than ten minutes.
Challenges with Older iPhones
Not all iPhones may be eligible for digitized IDs, even if they seem suitable. My initial trial with an iPhone 8 Plus revealed that California wasn’t an option on the setup page.
Curiously, I found conflicting information regarding enabled states for adding a license. After revisiting an Apple support article, I discovered a crucial detail—California’s system requires an iPhone XS or newer running at least iOS 17.5.
If you’re using an iPhone 8 or X and reside in California, you’ll be unable to add your digital ID due to this limitation.
Adding Your ID to Apple Wallet
If you’re in a supported state, the process to add your digital ID is smooth:
- Open Apple Wallet.
- Select the Add button.
- Choose Driver’s License or ID and specify your location.
- Decide if you want it on your iPhone only or also on your Apple Watch.
- Follow instructions to scan your license.’
Ensure the scanning is done in well-lit conditions for clear images.
Next, you’ll confirm your identity with a face selfie, which may require you to complete various facial movements. To streamline this part, consider the following:
- Stand against a plain background.
- Ensure good indoor lighting.
- Remove any face-covering accessories.
- Keep your iPhone steady during the photo process.
Finalize by confirming your details using Face or Touch ID, binding the biometrics to ensure only you can access them.
Transferring Your Digital ID
If you upgrade your iPhone, transferring your digital ID is straightforward:
- Select Wallet during initial setup.
- Choose your ID.
- Follow the prompts.
- Confirm the transfer to the new device.
What Happens Next?
Your digital ID doesn’t show a full image, but key information can be accessed in Apple Wallet. To view your ID details, tap on the “i” icon, where you can see all relevant information.
TSA checkpoints equipped for digital IDs will utilize a special scanner, meaning the process might not necessarily be quicker than displaying a physical ID.
While the idea of having a digital ID is practical, current use cases are limited. Widespread adoption will depend on additional hardware investments, indicating the traditional ID isn’t disappearing just yet.
Selling or Trading Your iPhone? Take Precautions
Before parting with an iPhone containing your ID, it’s crucial to remove it to protect your sensitive information. Here’s how:
- Open Apple Wallet and select your ID.
- Tap the “i” button.
- Select Remove State ID.
- Read and confirm the on-screen warning to proceed.
Exciting Digital Passport Features Ahead
With upcoming updates in iOS 26, Apple plans to introduce the option to add a digital passport to Apple Wallet. This feature will allow scanning of passports for identity verification during domestic flights, although you’ll still need a physical passport for international travel.
Apple stated that this digital version can also be utilized in apps and in-person, although specifics remain sparse.
Streamlined Age Verification with Verify with Wallet
An innovative feature arriving on iPhones is “Verify with Wallet,” simplifying age verification for age-restricted purchases. For example, when ordering alcohol via Uber Eats, your stored digital ID can confirm your age without needing a physical card presented at the door.
