Apple Music Launches ‘Discovery Station’ to Compete with Spotify
Apple’s music streaming service, Apple Music, is now offering a new algorithmic radio station called ‘Discovery Station’ in a bid to rival Spotify’s personalized playlists.
For several years, Spotify has been known for its popular “Discover” playlists, which help users find new music. In response, Apple Music has introduced the Discovery Station to enable its users to explore new songs.
The unique feature of the Discovery Station is that it only plays songs that users haven’t heard before. It excludes songs that are already present in the user’s playlists, songs that have been liked, or songs that are already in the user’s library. This ensures that users are introduced to fresh and unseen content. Apple Music’s existing ‘New Music Mix’, on the other hand, is a weekly updated playlist limited to just 25 tracks.
In addition to the Discovery Station, Apple Music also provides a personalized station called ‘[User Name’s] station’, which curates a mix of the user’s favorite tracks and some similar ones.
Although the company has not made any official announcements about the new algorithmic discovery playlist, some users have reported finding it on the web and in the Apple Music app. According to MacRumors, there is a direct link to the playlist for those who cannot see it within the app yet.
