Employers had to do everything they could to find and maintain DevOps and the reliability of the site by the end of the 2010s.
The mentality of software developers is changing and employers must take this into account
Professor Ed Felten of Princeton believes that software developers today want to make a positive change in the world and that employers need to understand their needs.
In 2010, the US Department of Labor predicted that IT jobs would grow by 22%, faster than average. In 2013, Gartner predicted that public cloud spending in 2016 would be $ 200 billion.
At the start of the decade, there were 62.6 million smartphone users and 140,000 apps in the iOS store. By 2018, smartphone users had hit 257.3 million and there were 2.2 million iOS apps and 2.6 million Android apps. Windows 10 came out in September 2014, the Amazon Echo appeared in 2015 and Apple started keeping track of health statistics.

The task and cloud forecasts were somewhat optimistic. By 2018, Department of Labor analysts had lowered the growth rate to 12% for the next decade, and cloud spending had reached just $ 183.4 billion in 2018. Regardless of the predictions, IT was a great place to be in the 2010 years. Developers, database administrators, and system architects offered good salaries and new opportunities. TechRepublic spoke with recruiters and looked back on job forecasts to compile this list of the most popular jobs of the past decade.
Emma Liebmann, head of talent recruitment at Collage.com, said thriving and lasting thoughts come to mind when thinking about the IT job market in the last 10 years. She said that not only the rough numbers had increased, but the variety had increased, along with special skills.
“With the increased demand for IT jobs, all types of companies need to adjust their brands and value propositions, in particular to attract highly sought after technical talent, even companies that had not previously considered themselves a” technology company, “she said.

Software engineers
In 2012, 2015 and 2017, software was at the top of every list of “hot IT tasks”. Alexandra Monteiro, vice president of people at OutSystems, said that full-stack developers and people with experience in machine learning, cyber security and IoT were the hardest to hire.
“Today, every business is determined by its digital strategy, and that trend is creating a huge demand for custom software,” she said. “This talent gap is what fuels the huge growth of low-code development platforms and other productivity strategies of developers.”
Katie Cox, the director of People Operations at SalesLoft, said the industry preference has shifted from specialists to engineers with varied skills.
“In the past, companies were looking for candidates with Java or .Net experience. Now a ‘polyglot’ background is much more attractive: IT recruiters are looking for technicians who have experience in many different languages,” she said.

Cox said that software engineers at senior and architect level had been the hardest to fulfill.
Damien Martin, marketing manager at Shufti Pro, said software architects have been at the top of the salary range in the last decade.
* In terms of managing the best salaries, software architects have remained at the top for the last ten years, with an average annual salary of around $ 130,000, “he said.
Mike Collins, an IT recruitment manager at the Addison Group, said that after finding the right candidate, the next challenge is to convince the person to take a step.
“People in these positions know that there is a lot of demand for it, since IT unemployment has a low point and as such is not inclined to play a new role if their salary is not increased and if they offered the same or better fringe benefits , such as remote work and flexible planning, “he said.
Rob Morgenroth, executive vice president at Mason Frank International, said he sees a growing demand for Salesforce developers, based on a study that his company is conducting.
“This year we found that while 71% of respondents were Salesforce certified, only 36% were certified developers,” he said. “It is clear that this is a prestigious but challenging credential, so we recommend that our talent network work towards this, given the identified skill gap compared to the demand for role in companies worldwide.”
Cloud architects and DevOps experts
As interest in cloud architecture grew, so did the demand for people with client experiences. Liebmann said the roles that were most difficult to fulfill were AWS and Azure Cloud architects.
“These positions are difficult to fill because they require expertise with older systems and expertise with new advanced technologies,” she said. “There is an increasing demand, but it is not a combination of skills that you can necessarily learn with the same ease as with some of the new coding languages such as Python.”
Cliff Milles, chief technical recruiter at Sungard AS, also said that technical architects who have experience with AWS cloud and Mulesoft have been the most difficult roles to fulfill.
Małgorzata Cichoń, a senior recruitment specialist at Netguru, said that DevOps roles are also difficult to fulfill.
“DevOps are often advertised, not just as support within the organization, but also for taking care of customers by identifying potential threats and improving internal processes,” Cichoń said.
Joe Kotlinski, a partner at the talent acquisition company WinterWyman, said that DevOps / cloud engineers currently have the greatest demand because the role is so new and because so many companies use cloud technology.
“As a result, demand for people with this experience continues to explode in recent years and capacity simply cannot keep pace with demand,” he said.

Kotlinski said it’s a good time to be a DevOps / cloud engineer, because managers offer recruitment, six-month bonus, remote work and unlimited vacation to attract and retain these professionals.
“The simple fact is that these people usually have four, five or six different offers at the same time,” he said. “If you don’t want to pay them, one of your competitors will.”
Austen Yueh, technical recruiter at LightStep, said that Site Reliability Technicians (SRE) in particular play the most challenging role.
“Compared to software engineering, the special challenges of a site reliability engineer are not addressed at school, boot camps, or other typical training programs,” he said. “These engineers are committed to keeping everything running smoothly for the rest of the engineering team.”
Cichoń said that managers and team leaders are also hard to find.
“We also have problems recruiting for typical leadership positions that must combine leadership and human management skills with extensive knowledge of the subject, such positions being a machine learning engineering manager or product designer.”

What about the next 10 years?
This Udemy 2020 Workplace Learning Trends Report: The Skills of the Future predicts that these skills will be popular in 2020, based on skills that had zero activity in 2018 but increased in 2019:
- Gatsby.js (web framework)
- AWS Big Data
- Reply Hooks
- Microsoft Azure Architecture
- Next.js (web framework)
- Apache Airflow (data processing)
- SwiftUI (Apple apps)
- Pegasystems (digital process automation)
- ESP32 (internet of things)
- Quantum computing
Liebman advised job seekers to think about how to match personal interviews with company values during interviews.
“Many companies feel perfectly comfortable rejecting someone they don’t regard as valuable, no matter how strong their technical skills are, so don’t forget to include value alignment in your search for the right company and your values to bring attention to your technical skills, “she said.
