Google Meet Tests AI-generated Backgrounds for Video Calls
Google is currently running an experiment with generative AI to create new backgrounds for Google Meet calls. This new feature allows users to type in a prompt and generate a background image for their video calls.
The feature, initially shared on Twitter by Artem Russakovskii, is part of Google Workspace Labs and is only available to a select group of users involved in the testing phase.
To utilize this feature, users must click on “Apply Visual Effects” and then select “Generate a background.” They can enter a prompt such as “Luxurious living room interior” and choose from various styles like “Photography,” “Illustration,” or “Fantasy.” The prompt also offers suggestions for generated backgrounds based on the user’s input.
If a user identifies any inappropriate or unsafe content generated by the AI, they can provide feedback to Google regarding the issue.
This is not Google’s first foray into AI-powered background generation. In May, the company unveiled a similar feature for Android at its Google I/O developer conference. Snapchat also introduced a generative AI-based background creation feature for its Snapchat+ subscribers earlier this year.
In addition to AI-generated backgrounds, Google Meet has introduced several new features throughout the year. These include emoji reactions, the ability to pause streams of individual tiles, support for 1080p streaming, and video tile pairing specifically designed for educational users.
Google continues to innovate and introduce enhancements to its video conferencing platform, aiming to provide an engaging and personalized user experience.
and Feedback Opportunities
This experimental feature encourages user engagement by allowing participants to actively contribute to its development. By providing feedback on generated content, users can help shape and improve the AI’s capabilities.
