Before Apple rolls out iOS 26 this fall, users can grab the latest updates with the new iOS 18.6 beta, which became available on June 18. While iOS 26 will introduce a major redesign for iPhones, the initial public beta of iOS 18.6 focuses primarily on bug fixes and security patches rather than introducing new features.
Given its beta status, it’s wise to download it on a secondary device rather than your main one. Since this isn’t the final version of iOS 18.6, you might encounter bugs or even reduced battery life, making it impractical for everyday use on your primary phone.
While we don’t have a definitive release date for iOS 18.6, it’s anticipated to be the last substantial update before the much-anticipated iOS 26 arrives in fall 2024.
This beta is all about security patches and squashing bugs
If you’re among the developers or beta testers, temper your expectations for this beta. The main takeaway from iOS 18.6 beta 1 is that it’s heavy on bug fixes and security enhancements. During my exploration of the beta, I didn’t spot any new features or drastic changesâ€â€something users have come to expect from Apple’s updates.
Historically, Apple released iOS 17.6 in July 2024, which, like this version, was packed with over 30 important fixes without any new features. The pattern shows a clear trend in Apple’s update strategy, mostly focusing on optimizing user experience before transitioning to the next major release.
This approach aligns with Apple’s intent to smooth out issues before they move on to the next beta phases of iOS 26, which has already seen two developer betas. While there are more betas to come for iOS 18.6, it’s unlikely we’ll see an influx of new features at this stage. Expect the public rollout of iOS 18.6 sometime next month, likely mirroring the release timelines of prior versions.
