Expansion of Patreon’s Tools for Digital Creators
Patreon is expanding its suite of digital creator tools to empower creators to sell one-off digital goods and offer free subscriptions, in addition to monthly fan subscriptions.
As per Julian Gutman, the chief product officer at Patreon, the free subscription product is a boon for creators as they can leverage their subscription list as a newsletter or to reach their most ardent fans.
This feature will incentivize fans to pledge a monthly sum, and creators can opt for which perks they want to offer for each level of membership. With the free membership, Patreon aims to enable creators to connect with their fans, even those who don’t pay for added benefits.
The new e-commerce shops make creators’ lives easier as they can sell products like bonus podcasts, videos, music, or writing directly on their Patreon page. Patreon will retain 5% of the sale, plus tax and payment processing fees for e-commerce transactions, which is less than the cut Patreon takes from subscriptions, starting around 8%.
Creators can join the waitlist to get access to these features, which are expected to launch more widely later this year.
