Apple’s latest iOS update introduces a feature designed to promote healthier screen habits: Screen Distance. If you’re like many users who spend around four hours a day looking at your iPhone, you might have experienced discomfort or eyestrain, especially when holding your device too close. This clever feature acts as a gentle reminder to keep your device at a safer distance, promoting healthier usage patterns.
Screen Distance works by alerting you when your device is positioned too close to your face. While it’s unlikely to cause serious eye damage, research from reputable health organizations suggests that straining your eyes in this way can lead to discomfort. By integrating this feature, Apple aims to help users reduce eyestrain and potentially lower the risk of developing myopia, or nearsightedness, particularly common among younger users.
Here’s how to activate Screen Distance and give your eyes a break.
Activating Screen Distance
1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Screen Time.
3. Select Screen Distance.
Upon accessing this feature for the first time, you will see informational screens explaining its function. Simply tap Continue on both to activate it automatically. After this, if your iPhone detects it’s too close to your face for a few minutes, the screen gets blocked by a message reading, “iPhone May Be Too Close.” You’ll need to distance your iPhone further to proceed.
Disabling Screen Distance
If you find the reminders a bit intrusive, disabling Screen Distance is straightforward:
1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Screen Time.
3. Select Screen Distance.
4. Toggle off Screen Distance.
This allows you to enjoy uninterrupted usage of your iPhone, regardless of how close it may be to your face.
As iOS continues to evolve, keep an eye out for more features aimed at improving user experience and wellbeing, including enhancements showcased in the upcoming iOS updates, which are already generating buzz.
