New Privacy and Security Startup Cloaked Launches Apps for Unique Proxy Emails, Phone Numbers, and Passwords

Providing Online Privacy and Security Solutions

Today, New York-based privacy and security startup Cloaked has officially launched its apps, offering users the ability to create personalized proxy emails, phone numbers, and passwords for their online accounts. This development comes after two years in a private beta phase, and now the solution is available to everyone through a web app, Chrome extension, and mobile apps for both Android and iOS.

Creating Online Identities for Enhanced Security

Brothers Arjun and Abhijay Bhatnagar founded Cloaked in 2020. The startup’s platform enables users to create “identities” that consist of usernames, passwords, email addresses, and phone numbers. These unique identities can be utilized for various types of websites, such as e-commerce, social media, and newsletters. By doing so, users can protect their real personal information from being disclosed.

Flexible Subscription Plans

Cloaked offers a subscription plan priced at $10 per month or $100 per year, with a 14-day free trial. Subscribers gain the ability to create unlimited identities, providing added value and convenience.

Going Beyond Password Management

Cloaked aims to be more than just a password manager. Similar to Apple’s Hide My Email feature, Cloaked masks users’ real email addresses; however, it also allows customization of email addresses. Furthermore, Cloaked acts as an inbox, enabling full control over email forwarding. In contrast, Firefox Relay only hides email addresses. Additionally, Cloaked offers the option to autofill online forms using stored identities, including one-time passwords received in the service’s inbox.

Virtual Phone Number Functionality

A standout feature of Cloaked is the ability to create virtual phone numbers similar to Google Voice, which can be used for SMS verification or signing up for services. Currently, this functionality is only available in the United States.

A Comprehensive Approach

The co-founders of Cloaked emphasize that the company works similarly to a phone company, managing all routing for phone numbers and ensuring secure email routing rather than relying on thin email aliases. They prioritize user privacy and security throughout their offerings.

Enhancing Security Measures

Cloaked’s commitment to security is evident in its approach. Each customer’s data is stored in separate encrypted databases to mitigate the risk of a breach. By using data poisoning techniques, Cloaked assigns one phone number to multiple individuals, ensuring that data aggregators cannot track individual users. Cloaked is also developing a zero-knowledge architecture, ensuring that the master password used to unlock users’ Cloaked profile never touches the startup’s servers. This approach ensures that Cloaked has no unilateral access to customer data.

Future Plans: Family-Sharing, Group-Sharing, and Virtual Cards

Cloaked has ambitious plans for the future. The startup aims to introduce family-sharing and group-sharing for identities by the end of the year. Additionally, they plan to integrate credit cards into identities, allowing users to generate virtual cards instead of sharing their real card numbers. These virtual cards can be customized for individual use, and users can set limits for each card.

Similar Solutions in the Market

Cloaked is one of many companies focused on simplifying privacy management through intuitive design and user-friendly workflows. Uno, a design-centric password manager backed by a16z, is another notable player in this space.
