Researchers predict that there is still a lot of demand for designers at all wage levels and employees with in-depth knowledge of the industry.

Tech certification organization and trade group CompTIA issued a new report in 2019 of the top 20 cities for tech workers.

CompTIA ranked cities not only based on their cost of living and the number of available jobs, but also in ranking the top 20 locations, including 12 months and five years of job growth.

“The moral of the story is that there is a nationwide need for well-trained, technically prepared employees,” the report said, adding that not only technical pillars such as San Francisco and San Jose make the list.

Sixteen locations in the report are repeats from last year, but four cities have joined the list, including Columbus, Ohio, which comes first in terms of living costs.

The top five cities and why they have earned their rank

1. Austin, Texas

Technical professionals looking for a hip city with opportunities don’t need to look any further than Austin.

Austin is quickly becoming the next tech hotspot: the cost of living is still relatively low, it is number one in both 12-month and five-year growth projections, and a number of major tech companies are moving to the Austin or are planning on Metro area Round Rock (46 in 2018 alone).

Apple is planning $ 1 billion in investments in Austin, and Microsoft Office competitor Zoho is planning a torelocate from California to Austin, bringing with it 500 new jobs.

2. Raleigh, NC

Raleigh is a bustling city for people looking for technical jobs in the biotech and medical industry, which are two of the largest employers in the region.

Not only are there plenty of jobs for technical professionals in the Raleigh area, but it also has the second best cost of living adjusted hourly rate on the list. This means that the average salary in Raleigh goes much further than in other places on the list.

3. San Jose, CA.

Those looking for jobs in Silicon Valley need not be disappointed: they are still plentiful. According to the report, the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara area had more than 140,000 openings last year and 10% growth is expected in the next five years.

There is a disadvantage to living where it is sunny and beautiful 300 days a year: the cost of living in the San Jose area is 44% higher than the national average, making San Jose at the bottom of the ton in terms of affordability.

4. Seattle

Believe it or not, Seattle is one of the most affordable locations on the list, right behind Raleigh in terms of cost of living / adjusted hourly wage. The cost of living in Seattle is high, but so are the salaries.

Seattle is not only affordable for the well-paid professional, the technical sector is also booming. Home to Amazon and Microsoft, Seattle is expected to see employment growth of 11% over the next five years.

5. San Francisco

It is perhaps one of the most expensive places on the list to live, but San Francisco completes the top five for a reason.

San Francisco, one of the largest technical hubs in the country, had more than 167,000 technical vacancies last year, is expected to grow by 13% over the next five years and has the highest concentration of “unicorns” (tech startups valued at more than $ 1). billion dollars).

Yes, the cost of living in San Francisco is 65% higher than the national average, but as the report says, “if you have big ideas, the benefits of the tech epicenter in the US can outweigh the costs.”
