Unlock Your Digital ID on iPhone with Apple Wallet Today

The latest updates to Apple Wallet are making waves, especially with the impending ability to store your driver’s license right on your iPhone. This feature frees you from the hassle of carrying a physical ID, making your life much easier and more convenient.

Currently, a select number of states allow this addition, enabling users to breeze through TSA checkpoints more efficiently. As adoption grows, digital IDs are set to become a game-changer for travelers.

Though it may take time for every state to get on board, let’s dive into which states currently support digital IDs in Apple Wallet, how you can add yours, and the exciting features expected in iOS 26.

States Supporting Digital IDs on iPhones

At the moment, only a handful of states are on the digital ID bandwagon, with each state having its unique approach to implementing a Mobile Driver’s License system. While states like Louisiana, New York, Utah, and Virginia allow for mobile licenses, they require separate apps.

Here’s a list of the regions that currently support digital IDs in Apple Wallet:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • New Mexico
  • Ohio
  • Puerto Rico

Even though several states have been introduced, many are not yet fully operational. TSA currently accepts digital IDs in 15 states across various platforms, including Apple Wallet.

Steps to Add Your ID to Apple Wallet

If you reside in a state that permits digital IDs, adding yours is straightforward. After you add your ID, you’ll go through a verification process that’s easy to navigate.

  • Open Apple Wallet.
  • Tap the Add button.
  • Select Driver’s License or ID and choose your location.
  • If needed, decide whether you wish to add your ID to your iPhone only or both your iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Follow the prompts to scan your license or ID.

Ensure you scan your ID in a well-lit environment and that the photo is clear. After scanning, you’ll need to confirm your identity with a selfie, and Apple may ask you to perform some facial movements for security.

To streamline your verification, Apple suggests:

  • Using a plain background with neutral, light-colored paint.
  • Being in a well-lit area, ideally indoors.
  • Removing sunglasses, masks, or hats that may obscure your face.
  • Holding your iPhone steady during the process.

Once you’ve completed all steps, confirm your submission using Touch or Face ID. This ensures that only you can access your digital ID.

Transferring Your Digital ID to a New iPhone

If you decide to upgrade your device, transferring your digital ID is a seamless process:

  • During initial setup, tap Wallet.
  • Select your ID.
  • Follow the prompts and confirm that you want to transfer your license or ID.

Upcoming Features: Digital Passports with iOS 26

While states are gradually implementing their digital ID systems, a new feature is on the horizon with the release of iOS 26: the ability to add digital passports to Apple Wallet.

This means iPhone users can scan their passports to create digital versions for verification during domestic travel. While these digital passports won’t replace the physical document for international travel, they should streamline the process at over 250 TSA checkpoints.

During the recent WWDC keynote, Apple indicated that digital IDs made from passports could also be utilized in apps and in-person, although specifics have yet to be disclosed. This functionality mirrors offerings already available with Android’s Google Wallet.

Verify Your Age More Easily with Wallet ID

Another exciting addition coming to iPhones this fall is the ability to verify your age more easily using your digital ID. For instances like alcohol deliveries via Uber Eats, the new Verify with Wallet feature allows your stored digital ID to confirm your age without fumbling for your physical ID.

Supported by Chime, Turo, Uber Eats, and U.S. Bank, this feature could simplify transactions significantly, although there may be complexities if you’re not personally receiving the delivery.
