In August, Arion Kurtaj, 18, was found guilty on multiple counts of hacking into and leaking private information from several tech companies, such as Uber and Nvidia.

Kurtaj was first caught by police in January 2022, along with a 17-year-old who was not named. They let the two go on bail while the probe went on. In March 2022, Kurtaj was caught again and put under house arrest in a Travelodge motel to keep him safe. He was able to hack into Rockstar Games from his hotel room by connecting an Amazon Fire TV Stick to the TV.

“If Rockstar does not contact me on Telegram within 24 hours I will start releasing the source code,” Kurtaj wrote in the company’s Slack channels, according to The Guardian.

According to the BBC, during Kurtaj’s sentencing on Thursday, the judge said he was not fit to stand trial because he had serious autism. He was sent to a secure hospital to stay there indefinitely until doctors say he is no longer a danger. His “skills and desire to commit cyber-crime” show that he is still a high risk to the public, the judge said.

The story says that prosecutors showed proof that Kurtaj had been violent while he was in jail and gathered dozens of reports of injuries or property damage.

A mental health report shown at the hearing said that Kurtaj “continued to express the intent to return to cyber-crime as soon as possible” and that he is “highly motivated,” as reported by The Guardian.

The BBC reported that Kurtaj was part of an international hacking group called Lapsus$. Their attacks on Uber, Nvidia, and Rockstar Games cost those companies a total of almost $10 million.
