There is a strong maker culture because so many people like to make things by hand. This is why more people are using 3D printers than ever before. I love the Glowforge professional 3D printer so much that I don’t even know where to begin. With a laser cutter, you can carve projects out of wood, leather, lucite, and other materials. This makes them an interesting way to make things besides 3D filament printers. The Glowforge is even better because it can do in minutes what would take a 3D printer hours to do.

I used it to make LED lights with laser-engraved designs, birchwood tool carts, and even a three-level box for my Nespresso sleeves. A big group of people makes and share files, but you can do a project from almost any line drawing you can make in Adobe Illustrator.

All of the software is cloud-based, which makes it more complicated (you need an internet connection to use it), but the ability to make great gifts from simple, cheap 0.125-inch or 0.25-inch plywood is quite powerful.

This new model from BCN can use two different coils of material at the same time because it has two extruders. It’s about the size of a desktop version of the bigger 3D printers he uses in his business.
