The Nintendo Switch has been out for four years, and it’s still a great place for families and people who want to play games with others. Make sure your Switch can connect to the TV to play games with other people in the same room. This fall, a new OLED-shielded switch will come out. It will be a small improvement over the TV’s current Switch. Both are better options for families than the Switch Lite, which only works in portable mode and doesn’t have Shareable Joy-Con controllers. Switch Lite owners can play multiplayer games but must buy an extra controller and crowd around the small screen.
If you only have one Switch, here are the best multiplayer games you should play with your family. We’ll keep this list updated as new games come out. The Nintendo Clubhouse games are one of my favorites. They are a collection of classic board games from around the world that you can play in person or online. Most of the links below are for digital versions of the games sold through Amazon. You can also buy and download these directly from Switch’s Nintendo eShop. Just make sure you have a microSD card with a lot of space to store game data.
There are a lot of Mario games for the Switch, and we’ll list some below. Super Mario 3D World was initially made for the now-defunct Wii U, but its mix of local and online multiplayer (up to four players) offers a lot of fun chaos on the Switch. Bowser’s Fury is a short bonus game that only needs the help of the second player, but it is an excellent addition. See New Super Mario Bros. U below to play Mario with other people. OR, try Super Mario Maker 2 if you’re going to make your own Mario.
Nintendo’s new family board and retro games collection include 51 surprising, funny classics worldwide. You can play them online or with other people in the same room. You can also play the game with a free app with another Switch nearby. Some games are for two people, while others are for three or four. Some games, like bowling, remind me of Nintendo’s Wii Sports. It’s a great way to learn how to play games like backgammon, chess, shogi, mahjong, and Canada; there’s plenty to do this summer. He works just as well on a TV, with one Switch, or between two or more Switches.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become a huge hit this year, and many people know it’s a game to buy a Switch for. The easy, relaxing, and social community game lasts forever, and a new mode lets more than one person play simultaneously, taking turns. In this game, where people work together, there are many ways to connect with other players and friends.
Animal Crossing is also a great game for families because it turns any group plays into a battle royale. There is no way to win; you can only plant trees, catch fish, and talk to other players. It’s the perfect video game for people too busy to do anything else. Remember that Switch can only do one island at a time, so get used to sharing.
Mario Kart 8
Mario Kart 8 will always be exciting for both old fans and newcomers. This Nintendo Switch game is excellent. It has a dozen incredible tracks, and the local multiplayer with four players can get a little crazy on a smaller TV. This is one of the first games we suggest for playing with more than one person on the Switch. It also has an online multiplayer mode, so kids can play with friends in quarantine without talking to them.
The Mario Party series from Nintendo is a long-running video board game with many weird minigames thrown in for good measure. The Nintendo Switch console version has a dance-rhythm party game, some training, and a game where players work together to paddle down a river. My whole family loves this game, and it’s a great game.
Even levels can be played with four people, making it a great way to learn how to make games and a Mario construction kit. In Super Mario Maker, there are always new things to do. If you want to play directly on the Switch, a simple stylus like the one shown here is a good choice.

In addition to being a Mario construction kit and a mini-course on making games, it also lets you download user-made levels so that up to four people can play the same class simultaneously. This eight-player multiplayer game for the Switch is like a cartoon and can be played by up to eight people at once. I’m just another character on a list with over 75 names. This couch co-op game and another played online or on a single screen can be found on the market (it gets crowded).
Nintendo’s cute planet-explorer and treasure-hunting strategy game starts with a group of plant-like Pikmin you must collect, care for, and feed. It came out on the Wii U console a long time ago. With the switch update, two players can work together throughout the game. On open maps, you can use a variety of party modes and challenges to get people to work together. There are also different levels. Don’t even get me started on the best Nintendo series you’ve never heard of.
Nintendo’s papercraft platformer takes a small step into the third dimension by adding a mode where two people can work together. Nintendo has a lot of fun platform games, but Yoshi’s challenges are a bit easier and focus more on finding surprises and hidden treasures.
This futuristic hover-racing game was one of the first games for the Switch. It is underrated, even though it is a cheaper version of Mario Kart or Wipeout for the system. Multiplayer is the best thing ever.
Mario Tennis
Mario Tennis doesn’t let things go. There are a lot of bad guys in Mario Tennis. Mario Tennis can be played online and may be one of the best sports games for the Switch. Here it is. It has crazy power-ups for the Mario characters as they play tennis.
I still like Mario Tennis better than Mario Golf, but this golf-themed party game has some new twists that are more fun to play with other people. It’s called “Super Rush” because it lets more than one person play simultaneously, even if they get in each other’s way. From here on out, the battle mode will only get crazier. On a single Nintendo Switch, you can play two-player split-screen or four-player turn-based golf (two players can also play online with others simultaneously on one Switch). There is also a long single-player adventure.
Ultimate Alliance 3
Ultimate Alliance 3 is part of a series of games for old consoles that feel like Diablo or an arcade fighting game but have dozens of beautiful characters. It can be boring sometimes, but collecting characters is fun, and you can always change your heroes.
Two people must cut each other’s pieces apart to solve a puzzle. You could also use a knife. It’s a puzzle game that two people can play together differently.
Tetris 99
But Sega also came out with Tetris 99, which has four-player online battles and a great puzzle game called Puyo Puyo. The model also has a long story behind it.
Since the real championships have been put off, now is a great time to play a virtual game with your family. All that matters is whether you prefer to watch football or basketball.
People were surprised by how much this side-scrolling platformer felt like Smash Bros. This four-player cooperative game also has a minigame battle mode. Features that are better than you’d expect.
Just Dance
Just Dance is an active alternative to Ring Fit Adventure if it’s hard to work out at home, and it works with the Joy-Con controllers that come with the Switch. They could be happy with any version of Dance they bought.
This cooperative puzzle game for two or four players is the cheapest great pick on our list. A crazy buy—spending he’s $15 right now.
Nintendo’s cartoon experiment is still worth trying if you can find it online and have a switch for hiding the TV. It’s like a craft kit or video game rolled up: a cardboard construction kit that takes hours to assemble. Each Labo kit has many extra games and experiments for people who have already built their wild creations. It’s like making things and playing video games at the same time. (If the great Labo VR set is also available, the original The Labo 1 variety kit may be the best choice for families with more than one child.)
Minecraft Dungeons
The Minecraft version of cooperative dungeon scan. Minecraft Dungeons is full of pixelated fun to play through for kids who want to fight but need more time to be ready for something as intense as, say, Diablo. It’s a different game from Minecraft, so don’t expect the same thing. But it’s fun for what it is.
NES and Super NES
The free NES and Super NES games that live on Switches (with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription) are a great way to play with a friend. Many games have two-player modes, which work well when the Joy-Cons are detached, and the Switch is set up on a table. There are also enough arcades, action, and sports games to keep the kids busy for hours. Or, do it in battles with high scores. We wanted only some of those NES and SNES games, but that’s a lot.
This couch co-op is fun for up to four people and moves quickly. The controls and gameplay are easy enough that even young children can play. The boss levels are hard enough to keep things interesting but not so hard that they are impossible. It’s a good choice if you want something you can play in short bursts, but he has 100 levels to beat, and after this year, Taito will make more content available for download, including new stadiums and the character Baron von Blubba.
