The Chase's Paul Sinha takes swipe at Piers Morgan after Naomi Osaka rant backlash

Piers Morgan, 56, sparked backlash after he branded Naomi Osaka, 23, “an arrogant spoiled brat” and accused her of exploiting mental health to silence the media. His comments came after the tennis star pulled out of The French Open this week after she decided not to speak to press, citing mental health struggles.

Naomi said speaking to journalists gave her “huge anxiety” and revealed she had suffered “long bouts of depression” since 2018.

As part of his column, Piers hit out at the tennis player in a lengthy rant after she shared a statement.

He wrote: “One thing’s very clear: this has got nothing to do with mental health.

“What Osaka really means is that she doesn’t want to face the media if she hasn’t played well, because the beastly journalists might actually dare to criticise her performance, and she’s not going to ‘subject’ herself to ‘people that doubt me.’

“And the problem with the French Open is that it takes place on clay, her statistically weakest surface, so she probably won’t win it, and when she loses, she’ll be asked why she isn’t as good on clay.”

Piers added to Daily Mail online: “In other words, she has no problem with the media lauding her undeniable brilliance with a tennis racket, right to the point they say anything negative, however reasonably and fact-based, because then they’re damaging her mental health.”

He went on to suggest that her decision to not speak with the press “is straight out of the Meghan and Harry playbook of wanting to have the world’s largest cake and eating it, by exploiting the media for ruthlessly commercial self-promotion but using mental health to silence any media criticism”.

It’s not the first time The Chase star has disapproved of the journalist’s actions.

Following Piers’ rant on Good Morning Britain about Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, Paul wrote: “Monsters entirely fuelled by screaming seemed far fetched till Piers Morgan.”

In 2016, the quizmaster also branded the presenter an “oleaginous buffoon” over his comments about the Olympic Games in Rio.

The journalist is no longer a part of Good Morning Britain team after he sparked over 57,000 Ofcom complaints following his comments about the Duchess of Sussex.

The father-of-four said he didn’t believe a word she said during her interview with Oprah, where she opened up about feeling suicidal.

Prince Harry’s wife also claimed a member of the family expressed concerns about the colour of their son Archie’s skin.

Buckingham Palace later released a statement regarding the claims.

They said: “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.

“Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
