All I Want For Christmas Is You is the number one song in the country for the first time in 25 years since its release. Few people know, Mariah Carey had help writing the timeless classic of a songwriter named Walter Afanasieff.
Walter collaborated with the singer on his other successes Hero and One Sweet Day before writing the number one Christmas song. Unfortunately, Walter says the victory is bittersweet because of the way Mariah made it look like she wrote it herself.
In several interviews on the melody, Carey describes writing it alone on his “little casio keyboard”.
In addition to getting little or no recognition from the singer, Afanasieff also has a problem with his fan base, often called the Lambs, whenever he mentions that he helped her with the song.
In an interview with Variety, Walter explains: “ With the crazy, wonderful and miraculous thing that it has been in my life for 25 years, it has come to a place where it is almost bittersweet for me because of the fact that I’m constantly defending myself every year at this same time of the year, because a lot of people just don’t believe I’m co-authoring the song. Mariah was very wonderful, positive and a force of nature. She’s the one who made the song so successful and she’s great. But it certainly does not share credit where credit is due. “
Walter goes on to say that he just wants to be able to talk about his involvement (since he legally owns 50%) without being attacked by the Lambs.
“As a result, it really damaged my reputation and therefore left me with a sweet and sour taste in my mouth. Because that’s it, a great and huge event for me, and yet my life is threatened on the Internet, because Mariah fans accuse me of having stolen it. “
