The Devastating Impact of Putin’s War in Ukraine: CIA Director Reveals Insights on the Rebellion by Wagner’s Leader

The Impact of Putin’s “War” in Ukraine

CIA Director William Burns Speaks on Russia’s Private Military Group Wagner

Introduction

CIA Director William Burns said Saturday the armed rebellion by the leader of Russia’s private military group Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, showed the devastating impact of President Vladimir Putin’s “war” in Ukraine on his country.

Scathing Condemnation

“It is remarkable that Prigozhin preceded his actions with a scathing condemnation of the Kremlin’s mendacious reasoning about the invasion of Ukraine and the Russian military leadership’s conduct of the war,” said Burns, a former US ambassador to Moscow, in a lecture given at the Ditchley Foundation in Oxfordshire, England.

Long-lasting Impact

“The impact of these words and actions will last for some time, in a vivid reminder of the devastating impact of Putin’s war on his society and regime,” he added.

Armed Challenge to Russian State

Burns described the rebellion as “an armed challenge to the Russian state” but said it was “an internal Russian matter in which the United States has not participated and will play no part”.

Putin’s Obsession with Ukraine

In a related context, Burns felt that “it is always wrong to downplay Putin’s (Russian President Vladimir’s) obsession with control of Ukraine.”

Strategic Failure for Russia

He also saw that “Putin’s war in Ukraine has already become a strategic failure for Russia.”
