According to rumors, Apple planned to create a pair of portable augmented reality glasses that would compete with Google Glass. As opposed to immersive virtual experiences like the AR/VR headset, the glasses would present digital information layered in the real environment. Apple still needs to provide the required hardware to create a thin, powerful wearable with adequate battery life.

Before delaying the project to 2025, Apple had originally planned to launch the Apple Glasses in 2023. However, the product’s introduction has now been delayed “indefinitely.” Apple has also slowed down the development of the product so that Apple Glasses won’t be available anytime soon. Bloomberg claims that Apple still views AR glasses as a product that may eventually displace the iPhone.

Some Apple employees, according to Bloomberg, don’t think the company will ever release augmented reality glasses. Most of Apple’s AR/VR team is devoted to developing their planned mixed-reality headsets. Some people are still investigating technology for potential AR glasses, though.

Apple is now concentrating on producing a more accessible mixed-reality headgear that will appeal to a larger range of users rather than augmented reality glasses. Since the first AR/VR headset is expected to cost roughly $3,000 this year, Apple hopes to offer comparable features in the future at a lower price.
