The Existential Threat of AI : OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Warns of the Risks and Benefits of Artificial Intelligence

The Existential Threat AI Poses to Humanity, Warns OpenAI CEO

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, has warned that AI poses an “existential threat” to humanity.

Global Tour to Discuss Artificial Intelligence

Altman is visiting the UAE as part of a global tour to discuss artificial intelligence.

“The challenge facing the world today is how to manage these risks and ensure we continue to enjoy these huge benefits,” said Altman, 38. “No one wants to destroy the world.”

Concerns Over OpenAI’s ChatGPT

Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT has grabbed the attention of the world with its essay-like answers to users’ questions. Microsoft has invested about 1 billion dollars in Open AI.

But the success of the program has also raised concerns. Hundreds of industry figures, including Altman, signed a letter in May in which states: “Mitigating the extinction threat of artificial intelligence should be a global priority alongside other societal risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

European Union’s AI Law

Lawmakers around the world are also studying AI. The 27-nation European Union is looking for an AI law that could become one standard de facto global governing technology.

Government Intervention Necessary

Altman made it clear to Congress in May that government intervention would be necessary to manage the risks posed by artificial intelligence.
