The governor of the region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said in a statement that “an ammunition depot caught fire near the village of Timonovo”, located less than fifty kilometers from the Ukrainian border in the Belgorod region.

He noted that no casualties were recorded, but residents of Timonovo and the nearby town of Soloti “were moved to a safe distance,” adding that authorities were investigating the cause of the fire.

A video clip published on social media it showed a gigantic ball of fire from which a thick black smoke rose. In another video, several consecutive explosions can be seen.

The fire, which broke out on Thursday, comes amid a series of explosions that hit Russian military installations near Ukrainian territory.

In early August, an explosion of ammunition belonging to the military aviation near the Saki military airport in Crimea killed one person and injured others.

A few days later, an ammunition depot in Crimea suffered explosions. Moscow considered it an act of “sabotage”, in a rare Russian admission.

And in a sign of continuing tension, on Thursday evening the Russian anti-aircraft defense was activated near the city of Kerch in Crimea, where a bridge connects the peninsula to the Russian mainland, built at great cost after the annexation process.

“The air defense systems have been activated in Kerch. There is no danger to the city or the bridge,” regional official Oleg Kryuchkov said, quoted by Russian news agencies.

These systems aim to intercept and destroy enemy projectiles or aircraft that enter their operating range.

And on Wednesday, Kiev, through presidential adviser Mikhailo Podolyak, threatened to “dismantle” the aforementioned bridge, currently used by a large number of Russians on their way to or returning from their holidays. in Crimea.

Since the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24, Moscow has repeatedly accused Ukrainian forces of launching attacks on its territory, especially in the Belgorod region.

And last month, rockets hit the city of Belgorod, the center of the region of the same name, causing four deaths, according to local authorities.

In early April, Gladkov accused Ukraine of attacking a fuel depot in Belgorod with two helicopters.
