The first of its kind… a liver transplant from a donor who died at the age of 100

The Italian National Center for Organ Transplantation has announced that Italian doctors have performed the world’s first liver transplant from a donor who died at the age of more than a hundred years.

According to the center, the liver was used from a woman who, at the time of natural death, was one hundred years, ten months and one day old, and she had long ago allowed her organs to be used for the benefit of patients in need.

The liver was obtained last week by the doctors of the Florentine San Giovanni di Dio Hospital and after all the necessary medical and legal procedures, it was transplanted to the patient at the University Hospital of Pisa.

“At the international level, there are no cases of donation of whole organs from people who have died and who are over 100 years old,” said the director of the Confederation, Massimo Cardillo.

According to Cardillo, “We are witnessing an exceptional event that demonstrates the technical and organizational possibilities of Italian transplantation, including using organs from elderly donors. It is important to respond effectively to the requests of more than 8,000 transplant patients in our country.”

According to the Confederation, the oldest donor in Italy is a woman who died at the end of October in the city of Fabriano at the age of 97 years and 7 months.
