The food that millions of people around the world eat can "destroy" vision

It is well known that vision deteriorates with age, but there are eating habits that can speed up this process.

A leading US ophthalmologist has warned that one such eating habit includes eating large amounts of fried foods, which can damage eyesight.

Dr. Brian Wahler, popular on TikTok, explains that trans fats, often found in fried foods, are associated with the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

“Fried foods are made with trans fats, which can raise cholesterol levels,” he said.

He adds that high cholesterol is “associated with age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.”

He supports a study published in the British Journal. of Dr. Wahler suggested ophthalmology after her results showed that those who consumed high amounts of red and processed meat, fried foods, refined grains, and high-fat dairy products were about three times more likely to develop advanced AMD.

Dr. Wahler recommends eating more fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and red peppers.

He added: “Foods containing lutein and zeaxanthin, such as spinach and kale, are also associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration.”

In addition, taking certain vitamin C supplements can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration.

A study on a supplement formula called AREDS2 containing 500mg of vitamin C, zinc, lutein, copper, vitamin E and zeaxanthin found that some of those on a diet low in fresh green leafy vegetables.

Notably, age-related macular degeneration does not lead to complete blindness, but is a condition that severely affects the central portion of vision.

The disease can affect one eye or both eyes, and its symptoms include:

Visual distortion: we see straight lines as wavy or curved.

– Objects look smaller than usual

– Colors look less vibrant than before

hallucinations: seeing things that aren’t there

Dr. Wehler also noted that eating “simple carbohydrates” such as those found in white bread and pasta has been linked to macular degeneration. He recommended that people eat whole grains instead, explaining, “Simple carbohydrates, such as those found in white bread and pasta, are associated with a higher risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).”

Studies have shown that high blood sugar levels are also associated with the onset of age-related macular degeneration. This is because high blood sugar is associated with the spread of inflammation.

These types of carbohydrates are digested very quickly, causing blood sugar levels to rise.

There are two types of age-related macular degeneration: wet and dry.

The NHS explains that dry age-related macular degeneration, which is less severe, develops gradually over several years and is caused by the accumulation of drusen, a fatty substance, at the back of the eye.

Although wet age-related macular degeneration is the result of abnormal blood vessels at the back of the eye, it is less common.

However, it can develop quickly, so if you develop symptoms of age-related macular degeneration, be sure to see your eye doctor as soon as possible.
