Leaving Neverland, an HBO documentary will arrive on Netflix UK in March 2021, following its release as a Netflix Original in Japan.

Synopsis

At the height of his stardom, the world’s biggest pop star, Michael Jackson, began long-running relationships with two boys, aged seven and ten, and their families. They now allege that he sexually abused them.

When the controversial documentary made its world premiere two years ago in 2019, it made numerous headlines.

The two-part documentary film, directed by Dan Reed for Amos Pictures, investigates allegations made against Michael Jackson by Wade Robson and James Safechuck.

The show eventually won a Primetime Emmy Award and premiered in March 2019 on HBO in the United States and Channel 4 in the United Kingdom.

Now, it looks as though Netflix UK will be getting Leaving Neverland at some point in March 2021. It was briefly added to Netflix UK on February 15th but clearly, Netflix jumped the gun a little too early in adding it.

Netflix UK will be getting the shorter Channel 4 version (which was cut from 4 hours to 3 to make way for advertisements) although Britbox in the UK will be carrying the extended cut (which is now available).

The difference in length between the Channel 4 version and the other version is approximately 47 minutes.

Leaving Neverland is a two-part documentary exploring the separate but parallel experiences of two young boys, James Safechuck, at age 10, and Wade Robson, at age 7, both of whom were befriended by Michael Jackson.

Through gut-wrenching interviews with Safechuck, now 40, and Robson, now 36, as well as their mothers, wives, and siblings, the film crafts a portrait of sustained abuse, exploring the complicated feelings that led both men to confront their experiences after both had a young son of his own.

Produced and directed by Dan Reed (HBO’s Emmy-nominated Three Days of Terror: The Charlie Hebdo Attacks and Terror at the Mall), the documentary recently had its world premiere in the Special Events section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

Leaving Neverland was produced and directed by Dan Reed; film editor, Jules Cornell; assistant producer, Marguerite Gaudin; cinematographer, Dan Reed; composer, Chad Hobson; music producer, Steve McLaughlin. For HBO Documentary Films: executive producers, Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller. For Channel 4: commissioning editors, Daniel Pearl, Tom Porter, and Dorothy Byrne.
