US President Joe Biden’s administration is expected to announce plans to send dozens of M1 Abrams tanks. The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has reportedly decided to send no fewer than 14 Leopard 2 tanks.
Privately, German officials insisted they would agree to the transfer of Leopard 2 in Ukraine only if the US also sent the M1 Abrams. Officials in both countries have denied any connection between the two possible moves, according to reports from the media Americans.
At least 16 European and NATO countries own Leopard 2 tanks, according to the International Institute for strategic studies. Ukrainian officials said the potential shipments could have a significant impact on the battlefield against the Russians. Interestingly, Britain has pledged to send 14 Challenger tanks in Ukraine and France is considering sending some of its “Leclerc” tanks.
