The Last Of Us Season 2: Release Date, Cast, Trailer, Plot and Everything We Know So Far

The year 2023 marks the end of the video game adaptation curse, and we can thank HBO’s The Last of Us for that. Adapting acclaimed video game developer Naughty Dog’s multi-game adaptation of the year-winning masterpiece is no easy task, owing to the game’s beloved stories and characters, as well as a fervent fanbase to defend them. Fans were understandably concerned about the show’s release, given that live-action video game adaptations are notorious for being inaccurate and, at worst, unwatchable. Having said that, as many fans of the show are aware, HBO’s The Last of Us is a video game adaptation done right.

In fact, The Last of Us could easily serve as a cautionary tale for all adaptations. The Emmy-nominated series was clearly created by a cast and crew who love and respect the original source material, but HBO’s hit isn’t afraid to deviate from the game in appropriate ways. From Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) infectious chemistry to the terrifyingly accurate Clicker zombies, not to mention a marvelous reinvention of Bill’s (Nick Offerman) and Frank’s (Murray Barlett) relationship, the series has already established itself as the best video game show adaptation ever made.

According to positive reviews and incredibly high ratings, critics and audiences worldwide appear to agree. HBO has already green-lit a second season of the show, possibly due to the success of the first. The prospect of Joel and Ellie returning to HBO Max is likely to excite the show’s fans and suffice it to say, we here at Collider are eager to see what the future holds for these characters. Here is everything we know so far about The Last of Us Season 2 to find out more about the next chapter in The Last of Us saga.

The Last of Us Season 2 Release Date?

Because the anticipated sophomore season of the show is still in early development, we don’t yet have a set release date for The Last of Us Season 2, but we can pretty safely rule it out for 2023. According to Bella Ramsey, the series will most likely return in 2025.

“It will be a while. I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next. So it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.”

The Last Of Us Season 2 Plot?

Druckmann and Mazin have already said that some of season 2 will cover what happened between Part I and Part II. This means that viewers may get to see what happens to Joel and Ellie’s relationship after Episode 9 and how it changes. Since they’ve also said they’ll show new stages of deadly Cordyceps variants, it’s likely that the show’s backstory will also be explored more. Even though Druckmann and Mazin may have changed a few things from the original story, it’s likely that The Last of Us season 2 will come back or set up the conflict between Abby, Ellie, and Joel.

Who’s Making The Last of Us Season 2?

The majority of The Last of Us Season 1’s creative team is expected to return for Season 2. Neil Druckmann, for example, has been heavily involved with the series based on the game he helped create. Following the announcement of the second season, Druckmann stated:

I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast & crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog & PlayStation, thank you!

The show’s creator and executive producer, Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), is also back for the second season. He has some similar nicknames for the cast before the second season:

I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.

Will The Last of Us Get a Season 3?

Fans of the games already know that there isn’t a The Last of Us: Part III right now. So, as things are now, there’s nothing left to change after Part II. So, it’s not surprising that The Last of Us Part II is almost twice as long as the first game. Mazin said that Part II could be enough for more than one season.

There’s no way to tell the remaining story in one more season. We would need more time than that. But we are also committed to moving toward a conclusion, as opposed to creating an open-ended series that goes on as long as people watch.

The Last of Us Season 2 Adapt The Last of Us: Part II?

We won’t know much about Season 2’s plot until a little while from now, but it seems likely that the new season will be based on The Last of Us: Part II (2020), which was a very popular video game sequel. Many fans of the series are well aware of the sequel and all of its twists and turns. In case you were one of the many who learned about Joel and Ellie’s story through the show instead of the game, here is a short summary of Part II that doesn’t give anything away. Keep in mind that this may contain spoilers for The Last of Us Season 1 and The Last of Us (2013) game.

The Last of Us: Part II takes place five years after the first game. Players meet Ellie (Ashley Johnson) in a very different way than they did in the first game. In the first game, Joel (Troy Baker) was the main character. In Part II, Ellie is by far the most important character in the story. Ellie is no longer the naive and wild teenager she used to be. She is now an adult woman with a lot of complicated feelings after finding out what Joel did for her in the last game. Ellie is no longer close to her father figure, so she helps Tommy (Jeffrey Pierce) and Maria (Ashley Scott) give back to the community they have built. However, everything changes when a mysterious group of soldiers led by a woman named Abby (Laura Bailey) shows up at their door. What the strangers do to Ellie and the rest of the town leaves scars that will never go away. This makes Ellie’s mind broken, so she wants revenge. Ellie goes to Seattle with her girlfriend Dina (Shannon Woodward) to find the people who did the horrible thing that happened to them.

Part II won a lot of Game of the Year awards, but it was much more divisive than the first game. So controversial, in fact, that it could be compared to Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) in terms of how divided people were about it. It seemed like about half of the people who played Part II called it a masterpiece, saying that it was a brave sequel that did a great job of surprising people and taking big risks with its story. The other half thought that Part II didn’t have what made the first game great and that it was rushed and didn’t do enough with some of the characters.

No matter how the second game is received, it makes sense that it will be turned into the show’s second season. Neil Druckmann, the creator of the original game and a contributor to the series, also hinted that this would be the case in a tweet that said “Part II” right after the second season was announced. Bella Ramsey also said the new season would focus more on her than Joel. She said, “I’m nervous about possibly being without Pedro for a while.”
