You know a story is good when it goes from being a movie to a Broadway show and back to being a musical movie. We’re talking about the musical version of Mean Girls, which sounds like a lot of fun. As the plot of the 2004 comedy Mean Girls came from Rosalind Wiseman’s non-fiction self-help book Queen Bees and Wannabees, which came out in 2002. There are a lot of references to high school cliques and how bullying can hurt kids in this book. Mark Waters directed it, and Tina Fey, well-known for her comedic work, wrote it.
The movie uses humor to deal with tough themes like fear, betrayal, and getting even, which makes it appealing to young people who may be going through similar things in their own lives. The movie’s first stars were Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, who were big names in Hollywood at the time. With so many big names in both front of and behind the camera, the movie made $128 million around the world.
Because of how well-liked the movie was, Mean Girls the Musical was made and opened on Broadway in 2018. The music is up-to-date and full of life, with a sound that is both rock and musical theater. Ten Tony Awards were given to the show, but it had to close in 2020 because of the COVID-19 plague, along with the rest of Broadway. Now, the musical movie version is almost ready to hit theaters.

What Is Mean Girl’s Plot?
The story is based on the same idea as the movie and the show, of course! After Cady Heron moves to the United States, she starts her first year at an American high school. Even though Heron grew up in Africa with science parents, she quickly learns about social cliques and how hard it can be to fit in with her friends. Janis I’mi’ike and Damian Hubbard are outcasts, but Heron makes friends with them and tries to describe the social order.
There are three pretty and famous girls in school called the “Plastics” at the top of the pyramid. Regina George is the leader of this group. She is known as “Queen Bee” and rules the school with an iron hand. She even decides what color her friends wear on what days. They wear pink every Wednesday! The other two Plastics are Gretchen Wieners, who is rich but nervous, and Karen Shetty, who is nice but has a big head.
Cady, Janis, and Damian come up with a plan for Cady to join the Plastics when they ask her to lunch with them. Becoming a part of the Plastics is hard for Cady because she wants to stay true to herself. As she tries to balance being in the Plastics, being friends with Damian and Janis, and being in love with the hot Aaron Samuels, she causes a lot of comedy.
The official synopsis from Paramount:
From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the modern classic, MEAN GIRLS. New student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.
