The ministers of water resources in Syria and Iraq discuss Turkey’s intransigence in the water dossier

The ministers of water resources in Syria and Iraq discussed today in a virtual meeting the challenges related to the water reality of the two countries, including the negative effects of climate change and the intransigence of the Turkish side regarding the reduction of the rate of water release from the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, as reported by the agency of SANA Syrian press.

The Syrian Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Tammam Raad, underlined in his speech the need for common action, the exchange of information, data and technical and scientific communication, and everything related to water developments for the benefit of the two countries.

Iraqi Minister of Water Resources Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani expressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with the Syrian side to find a common solution to the conditions and obstacles facing the two countries and to collaborate with Syrian experts to establish a center for research in Baghdad and hold training courses for Syrian technicians in the field of groundwater.

The Director of the National Center for Water Management in Iraq gave a presentation on the assessment of water quotas for Syria, Iraq and Turkey and the applicable basis for determining these quotas.

Iraqi Minister Al-Hamdani went in Syria last July to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the field of water and water resources and to unify their positions in international forums to defend and preserve their water rights from the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. a virtual meeting between the two parties and a visit by Minister Raad in March 2021 to Baghdad to participate with a technical delegation at the first Baghdad International Water Conference.
