The Rise of Bot Creators on Quora’s AI Chatbot Platform Poe: Monetizing the Efforts of AI Bot Builders

The Rise of Bot Creators on Quora’s AI Chatbot Platform Poe

When you think of the term “creator,” you generally think of someone making content for social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram. But Quora’s AI chatbot platform Poe is now paying bot creators for their efforts, including those who generate “prompt bots” on Poe itself, as well as server bots created by developers who integrate their bots with the Poe AI.

The First Monetization Program for AI Bot Creators

The program, which went live last week, is among the first of its kind to monetarily reward the efforts of those building AI bots. Quora aims to empower bot creators by providing them with opportunities to generate income.

Two Ways to Generate Income

At launch, there are two ways for bot creators to generate income. The first method involves the bot leading a user to subscribe to Poe, in which case the company will share a cut of the income back with the bot’s creator immediately. The second method allows bot creators to set a per-message fee, which Quora will pay for every message. The latter option will soon be available, according to the company.

Quora’s AI Chatbot App Poe

Quora first introduced its chatbot app Poe to the general public in February, which allows users to ask questions and get answers from a range of AI chatbots, including those from ChatGPT maker OpenAI and other companies like Amazon and Google-backed Anthropic. Poe serves as a platform for consumers to experiment with new AI technologies while also contributing to the evolution of Quora’s Q&A site.

Rapid Growth and Traction

Poe has been gaining traction in the growing AI chatbot market. According to data from market intelligence provider Apptopia, Poe’s mobile app reached 253,530 downloads in its first month open to the public. As of October, it has been installed over 18.4 million times and has nearly 1.22 million monthly active users. However, the app’s in-app purchase income currently amounts to less than a quarter of a million dollars per month. It’s worth noting that many Poe users may be interacting with the chatbot platform via the web and signing up for its subscription plans there instead.

The Creator Monetization Program

Poe’s creator monetization program is currently only open to US users and countries offering up to $20 per user who subscribes to Poe through a creator’s bots. The program calculates this metric based on factors such as bringing a user to Poe for the first time, bringing a user back to Poe who eventually subscribes, displaying a bot’s paywall just before a user subscribes, or if users send messages to a bot at a price set by the developer. The program aims to enable smaller companies or AI research groups to create bots that reach the public, even if they lack the resources to build an AI chatbot application themselves.

A New Market of Opportunities

Quora believes this program will facilitate the creation of bots in various areas, including tutoring, knowledge, therapy, entertainment, assistants, analysis, storytelling, and media generation such as image, video, and music. Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo stated, “Since this is the beginning of a new market, there are lots of opportunities to provide valuable service for the world and make money at the same time.”
