Durov wrote on his Telegram channel: “Over the past five years, Telegram has managed to overtake Messenger (Facebook) and become the most popular messaging app. year. So it’s not surprising that our competitors are worried.”

Durov based his words on data from Fortune magazine. In 2018, Telegram accounted for 5 percent of the messaging app market, and Messenger (Facebook) for 43 percent, she said. In 2022, Telegram will have a 31 percent share and Messenger (Facebook) a 21 percent share. On the other hand, WhatsApp accounted for 51 percent of the market in 2018 and 44 percent in 2022.
