The Sudanese Sovereign Council appoints Khalifa Ahmed as interim public prosecutor

The Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan announced today, Thursday, that it has appointed Khalifa Ahmed as interim attorney general.

In a session held today, led by army commander Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, the council was briefed on the general security situation in the country, “against attacks targeting the armed forces on the eastern border”, in reference to the recent killing of Sudanese soldiers on the border with Ethiopia.

Dr Salma Abdel-Jabbar, member of the Sovereignty Council and official spokesperson for the council, said in a press release that the council “expressed appreciation for the efforts undertaken by the armed forces and the swift support in addressing all attempts that want to undermine the security and stability of Sudan”.

He also hailed the “police forces and the general intelligence service for their efforts in maintaining the safety and security of citizens”.

In another context, Al-Burhan affirmed his full cooperation with Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok for “the success of the transition period, which leads to free and fair elections”.

During his meeting today at the Republican Palace, Volker Peretz, head of the UN Mission in Sudan “UNITAMS” urged the United Nations to provide “the humanitarian support needed to Sudan to overcome humanitarian difficulties during the transition period”.

Al-Burhan called on “the sectors of the Sudanese people to support and support the government that Dr. Abdalla Hamdok will form in the next period”, inviting “the national political forces of the country to take advantage of the remaining transitional period of preparation for the elections”.

For his part, the head of the “UNITAMS” mission underlined the interest of the United Nations in the success of the transition period, considering that the agreement signed on November 21 between Al-Burhan and Hamdok “is a step in the direction of national consensus among the Sudanese. “He noted the” great steps that have been taken in implementing the terms of the agreement, first of all the release of political prisoners “.

Volcker also called for the need to support the prime minister to form his government, underlining his confidence in Hamdok’s abilities to make the democratic transition a success.
