The Turkish Basaksehir signs Mesut Ozil

Istanbul: the club Basaksehir, who won the Turkish Super League title in 2020, announced the signing of former German international midfielder Mesut Ozil on a one-year contract today Thursday. “I am very happy,” said Ozil, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, during the presentation ceremony. Goksel Gumusdag, president of Basaksehir, said the club offered Ozil to join his ranks for two years, but the German player preferred to join for a season with the option to extend it for another season. The contract with Basaksehir came a day after Fenerbahce announced the termination of Ozil’s contract by mutual agreement between the two sides. Ozil, 33, joined Fenerbahce from Arsenal last year, after being sidelined from the squad in March. Ozil said last month that he would complete his contract with Fenerbahce, which was supposed to extend until 2024. Fenerbahce did not disclose the reasons for the termination of Ozil’s contract, but the president of the club Ali Kok said last November that the German player should focus on football, not his commercial activities.
