The UN urges Musk to respect Twitter for human rights

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk urged new Twitter owner Elon Musk to ensure that the social network respect human rights, in an open letter published on Saturday.

“Like all companies, Twitter must understand the damage associated with its platform and take steps to remedy it. Respect for human rights should be a security barrier to the use and development of the platform. In short, I invite you to ensure that human rights are key to running Twitter under your leadership, “wrote Türk. .

In his letter, Turk claimed reports that Musk had fired the whole team for the human rights of the platform “it was not, in my opinion, an encouraging start”.

The UN Commissioner expressed “concern and fear for our digital public sphere and the role of Twitter in it”.

Turk posted the open message on Twitter, where it is followed by over 25,000 people.

The commissioner mentioned 6 fundamental principles on human rights and urged Musk to adopt them in the management of Twitter. These principles include the protection of freedom of expression and privacy and the guarantee of transparency.

On Saturday, Twitter rolled out a $ 8-per-month subscription to get the blue check mark for verified accounts, as part of a review of the platform verification system led by new owner Elon Musk.

In an iOS update on Apple devices, Twitter announced that users who “subscribe now” can have a blue check mark next to their name, “just like celebrities, companies and politicians.”

Thursday, Musk mocked, in a tweet, the willingness of Twitter users to pay $ 8 for a coffee drink and their resentment for paying the same amount to keep the blue tick.

Musk began firing hundreds of Twitter employees on Friday, four days before the midterm election, including members of the team who worked on the US elections and edited the content on the platform of social media.

Tweets flooded the platform on Friday, and several employees used hashtags to share news, while other employees reported leaving.

Many of those previously laid off have worked in departments senior including public policy, trust, security, communications, engineering, marketing and human resources.
