The US Navy intercepts a vessel in the Gulf of Oman carrying munitions from Iran to Yemen

The U.S. Fifth Fleet announced on Saturday that it had intercepted a fishing vessel in the Gulf of Oman on December 1 and said it was smuggling munitions and rocket fuel on a sea route from Iran to Yemen.

Fifth Fleet said in a statement that the vessel was carrying a cargo of more than 50 tons, noting that this is its second operation to confiscate a large shipment of contraband weapons within a month.

The statement quoted Brad Cooper, commander of US Naval Forces Central Command and Fifth Fleet, as saying that the interception of the vessel “clearly demonstrates Iran’s continued illegal transfer of lethal aid and its destabilizing behavior.”

The US Navy has stressed that the direct and indirect supply, sale or transfer of weapons to the Houthis in Yemen violates international law and the related Security Council resolution.

The Fifth Fleet had previously intercepted a fishing vessel illegally carrying “lethal aid” from Iran to Yemen on Nov. 8, according to the statement.

About two weeks ago, a spokesman for the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, Tim Hawkins, confirmed that the United States is ready to address Iranian threats to the region.

He added in an interview with Al Arabiya that the United States is committed to maintaining the security of the Straits of Hormuz and Mandeb.

She also explained that sharing information with partners builds trust and strengthens relationships.
