The Visit of England’s King Delayed as Paris Remains in Turmoil

The French presidency said today, Friday, that the state visit of King Charles of Great Britain in France will be postponed due to tensions over pension reform. The French and British governments made the decision after a phone call between President Emmanuel Macron and the king, the statement said.

The announcement came after fears that the protest movement over the pension system in France would have influenced the visit of the British king Charles III, who according to the trade unionists would have been “at the center of their attention”.

“We continue to mobilize (to protest against the reform) and this visit will be our goal,” Mathieu Aubry of the General Confederation of Workers and Yvan Faure of the labor union told Sud Ouest.

French Interior Minister Gerard Darmanan said Friday that 4,000 police and gendarmes will be deployed in occasion of the visit, which will begin on Sunday evening. “We will be ready to receive (the King of England) in ideal conditions,” he told CNews.

Charles’ visit lasts from Sunday to Wednesday and is his first state visit since taking the throne.

He was to address members of the French parliament on Monday and be a guest at an official dinner at the Palace of Versailles. He also visits Bordeaux in southwestern France.

“It is almost certain that the king will not be in able to take the tram” in Bordeaux as he intends, said Pascal Mesghetti, delegate of the CFTC union at the Bordeaux transport authority.

PCF spokesman Jan Brossa said Emmanuel Macron “certainly relies more on the monarchs than on the elected representatives of the people who have been denied the right to vote on the reform of the pension system” after the government decided to approve the bill without vote on the basis of the constitutional term 49.3.
