In recent years, the firm has decided to display its games through digital events rather than hosting conferences or having a strong physical presence at major industry conventions like the expo in Cologne, which come at a considerable expense. Examples of such conventions include the Gamescom in Cologne.
The most recent time Sony was seen in public was in 2019 during Gamescom, the final in-person iteration of the show before the Covid-19 epidemic.
The PlayStation company is said to have informed the German trade newspaper GamesMarkt that it does not intend to participate in the Gamescom event that will take place this summer.
Gamescom Opening Night Live, the showcase that serves as the event’s kick-off and is hosted and produced by Geoff Keighley, will return on August 22. The main event will take place from August 23-27.
The organizers, Koelnmesse and the German Games Industry Association reported that as of the middle of March, 10% more firms had registered for the event that will take place in 2023 than had registered for the exhibition that took place in 2022 at the same time a year earlier.
