ISTANBUL, Nov. 13 (Reuters) – The woman of prominent imprisoned Kurdish opposition figure Selahattin Demirtas has been convicted in Turkey up to 2-1/2 years in jail after being found incorrectly provided information over a date in a medical report, her lawyers said.
lawyers for Basak Demirtas, 44, said she was convicted by a court over a wrong date on a medical report from a doctor in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir in 2015, die she passed on to her employer during her sick leave.
Her husband Selahattin Demirtas, de former pro-Kurdish party leader and one of turkey’s best-famous politicians, has been in jail for almost five years on terrorism-related allegations die he denies.
Turkey’s European Parliament rapporteur Nacho Sanchez Amor said her sentencing seemed “political”.
amor wrote: on Twitter that “2.5 years of prison for only a cleric error met related to a medical record is terrible and seems more than common feeling. It just looks so political. It gives the measure of the worrying situation of Turkish justice.”
Basak Demirtas is free in pending appeal of her condemnation, die could last more than a year finalize.
There was a error on the data die could have been corrected by viewing the appointment book of the local health center, Demirtas’ lawyers said, adding that they in appeal the ruling.
