UK suspends flights to . on six African countries if new Covid variant raises the alarm

The United Kingdom temporarily suspends flights from six countries like a new Covid variant with more than 30 mutations spread in South Africa.

Sajid Javid, the UK secretary of stands for health and social care, made the announcement hours after the World Health Organization briefing on the new variant. The organization called for An special meeting on Friday to further study the detected variant in small numbers in South Africa.

“More data is needed, but we are now taking precautions. Starting tomorrow 12.00 pm six African countries will be added to the red list, flights are temporarily banned and British travelers must in quarantine,” wrote Javid on tweet.

In addition to South Africa, countries of Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana are included in the new restrictions, according to a statement from the UK’s health, transport and health security authorities.

The WHO holds a special meeting on Friday to discuss what the new variant can mean: for vaccines and treatments, officials said Thursday.

The variant, named B.1.1.529, has been detected in South Africa in small numbers, according to the WHO. The variant has spread rapidly throughout Gauteng province, die contains the largest in the country city of Johannesburg.

The variant has also detected in Botswana and Hong Kong, minister from South Africa of Health said Joe Phaahla during the briefing.

“We do not know a lot more here over. What we do know is that this variant has a large number of mutations.
