Ukraine calls on Congress to designate Russia as a sponsor state for terrorism

The Verkhovna Rada announced today, Tuesday, the adoption of a resolution calling on the House of Representatives and the Senate of the United States Congress to designate Russia as a “sponsoring state of terrorism”.

He said on his Twitter account that this would lead to the imposition of new sanctions on Russia, which launched a military operation in late February. in Ukraine.

The Verkhovna Rada also called on Congress to impose further sanctions on Russia and the countries that collaborate with it, adding: “We are counting on the support of our American friends.”

Sixth package of sanctions

This comes in coinciding with confirmation today by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell that the EU is working on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia in response to his military operation in Ukraine.

Borrell said on his Twitter account that the new sanctions package aims to separate more Russian banks from the global SWIFT financial system and take care of oil imports.

He also added that the new measures against Moscow will be submitted for approval by the European Council, noting that the military operation launched by Russia in Ukraine in late February affects global security.

It is noteworthy that since the launch of the Russian military operation in Ukraine on February 24, Western countries sided with Kiev, backing it with weapons and aid, and imposed thousands of painful sanctions on Moscow, which abided by its right to disarm its western neighbor, which is considered a threat to its security, and prevent him from joining NATO.
