On Monday, Ukrainian prosecutors announced that they had found four “torture sites” used by Russian forces while they seized the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine, which Kiev forces retook on Nov. 11.
“In Kherson, prosecutors continue to identify crimes committed by Russia: four places of torture have been found in four buildings,” he wrote on his Telegram account.
According to the indictment, Ukrainian investigators visited 4 buildings, including the pre-war “temporary detention centers” where, during the capture of the city, the Russians illegally detained people and brutally tortured them.
Electrocution of civilians
The same source added: “Pieces of rubber batons, a wooden club, a tool used by the occupiers to electrocute civilians, an incandescent lamp and bullets were seized.”
Similarly, the Ukrainian prosecutor confirmed that “the work aimed at locating the illegal torture and detention rooms continues”, noting that they are also aimed at “identifying all the victims”.
Since the withdrawal of Russian forces from Kherson on Nov. 11, Kiev has repeatedly denounced Russia’s “war crimes” and “atrocities” in the Kherson region. While Moscow has not yet responded to these allegations.
Big setback
Interestingly, this withdrawal was a major setback for the Russian military, especially since it was the first major Ukrainian city to fall into its hands since the conflict broke out on 24 February.
It also constitutes, together with Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhia, the four regions that the Kremlin announced at the end of September (2022) to annex.
Furthermore, its geographical position is of particular importance, in as the region lies on the borders of the Dnipro, Petrovsk and Nikolaev regions, and has land borders with the Crimea in the south, while facing the Black Sea in the southwest, and in the southeast the Sea of Azov.
