The Russian military operation in Ukraine continues today, Tuesday, as units of the Russian army are trying to establish control over the Ukrainian regions, while Kiev continues to resist with material and military support from the West.
In the latest developments on the ground, the governor of Russia’s Kursk region said a drone strike on an airport in the region set an oil storage tank on fire. He added: “There were no injuries. All emergency services are working on the site.” The region is located on the border with Ukraine.
Before that, a Ukrainian official said Kiev had targeted two military bases hundreds of miles apart inside Russia using drones. The drones took off from Ukrainian territory, destroying at least two planes in one of the two Russian bases and damaging several others.
And the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its air defenses had intercepted a series of drones launched by Ukrainian forces against two airfields in the Russian provinces of Ryazan and Saratov.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian air defenses “shot down most of the missiles” launched by the Russian military on Monday, which allowed direct energy engineers to restore electricity to areas damaged by Russian attacks.
This comes as ICC prosecutor Karim Khan warned that the formation of a special tribunal to hold Moscow accountable for committing alleged crimes in Ukraine threatens to obstruct investigations its agencies are conducting in this country.
Khan called on the international community to focus its efforts instead on supporting and funding the Criminal Court, which is currently investigating war crimes and crimes against humanity accused of Russia, stressing that the International Criminal Court is already facing a budget deficit.
Last week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed setting up a UN-backed special tribunal to try Russian officials for these alleged crimes.
