Union Berlin Pull off Stunning Upset, Defeat Ajax in Europa League

Onion Berlin secured a place in the round of 16 of the European Football League on Thursday, with a 3-1 victory over Ajax Amsterdam. This is the biggest continental win for the club German since they entered the local first division in 2019. The match, held at the Alte Fürstrei stadium, was met with raucous celebrations from their fans.

Union Berlin are currently unbeaten in 2023 and are tied with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for the lead in the Bundesliga. In the first half of the match, Ruben Knoch scored from the penalty spot to give Union the lead in the 20th minute. Defender Josip Juranović then shot from outside the area, which escaped the fingers of Ajax goalkeeper Jerónimo Rolli.

Ajax, the former European champion, scored their goal in the 47th minute when Mohamed Quddous capitalized on Steven Bergwijn’s cross. However, Union restored the two-goal lead with a Danilo Djohi header three minutes later. This was another disappointing evening in Europa League for Ajax, who have been eliminated at the first hurdle six times in their ten attempts.

The match ended with Ajax playing with ten players after Edison Alvarez was sent off after receiving a second stoppage-time warning. Onion Berlin, who are flying high, will have little time to celebrate their victory as they face Bayern in their battle for the top of the German First Division next Sunday.
