United States Archives: Government documents are still held by Trump aides

The US National Archives and Records Administration said former President Donald Trump’s administration did not deliver all presidential documents and that the National Archives will consult with the Justice Department about whether to take steps to recover them.

A congressional committee on Sept. 13 called for an urgent review of national archives and records after administrative staff admitted that they did not know if all the presidential documents had been delivered by the Trump White House.

In a letter sent Friday to the House Oversight and Reform Commission, Acting Director of the Archives Debra Wall said her administration knows that some White House employees have conducted official business on personal email accounts that are not. been copied or forwarded to their official accounts, in violation of the presidential documents law.

“The National Archives and Records Administration was in able to obtain such documents from a number of former officials and will continue to pursue the return of similar types of presidential documents from former officials, ”Wall said in the letter.

He said the Archives and Documents Department, charged with maintaining government records, will consult with the Justice Department on “whether action should be taken to restore documents that have been illegally taken.”

Rep Carolyn Maloney, chairman of the oversight committee, said in a statement that will do everything possible to ensure that all documents are returned and prevent future abuse.

“Former President Trump and his staff senior have shown complete disregard for the rule of law and our national security by not returning presidential documents as required by law, “said Maloney in a note.

Trump representatives did not respond to a request for comment. The Justice Department is conducting a criminal investigation into Trump’s government record keeping, some rated as top secretin his house in Mar-a-Lago, in Florida, after leaving office in January 2021.
