USA vs. USA Russia: Live scores, snapshots, updates from World Juniors 2020

Two superpowers with a long history – Miracle on Ice, anyone? – hit the ice on Sunday for a preliminary game with significant impact.

Russia and the United States are locked in a close race with each group B team, also known as a “death team”. Through two games, each team has won one and lost one, meaning you can easily beat the team or drop to fifth and try to avoid relegation. The US lost their first game to their Canadian rivals 6-4, but bounced back and beat Germany 6-3 on Friday. Russia was defeated by one of its rivals, the Czech hosts, on Thursday, and then overwhelmed Canada 6-0 on Saturday.

Spencer Knight will be in the net of Team USA, who has put his lines on the blender. Cole Caufield has reunited with Wisconsin teammate Alex Turcotte, who should take on Montreal Canadens prospect and well-known shooter. Trevor Zegras, who leads the tournament with five assistants on Sunday, will play in the opposite wing of Arthur Kaliyev. According to ESPN’s Chris Peters, Kaliyev and Zegras also have a history of playing together from the early days.

The big question he introduced on the day was who would start the net for Russia. The expected number 1 entering the tournament was the top prospect for 2020 Yaroslav Askarov. However, he was pulled after 40 minutes in the loss to the Czech Republic and did not start against Canada. Amir Miftakhov started the game and cut the Canadians to 28 shots on target. Miftakhov will be back between the pipes for a Russian team rolling four lines that can all bury the puk. Some of the players to watch for Russia are prospects Florida Panthers Grigori Denisenko, Minnesota and Monkton Wildcat Alexander Khovanov and Calgary Hitmen Defenseman and Flyers Dragor Yegor Zamula.

Sporting News has all the action as the two championship teams battle for the top of Group B at the 2020 IIHF World Youth Championships.

(All hours are Eastern)

11:43 am – Russia returns to Miftakhov.

Here is how Russia will align with the US. All four lines can score, they have really solid Dmen and played a heavy, disciplined game against Canada last night. It’s going to be a challenge. It also appears that Amir Miftakhov is taking over after closing the Canadians.
