‘Very excited’ Henry Cavill ‘definitely ready’ for next James Bond talks with producers

He came so very close last time. Back in 2005, the search for the next James Bond was down to the final two, fairly low-profile actors – Daniel Craig and Henry Cavill. The latter was only 22 at the time and relatively untested as any kind of action hero, which certainly contributed to his stumble at the final hurdle. At 38, he is the perfect age and has taken on major heroic roles like Superman, anti-heroes like The Witcher and secret agent-turned villainous killing machine August Walker in Mission Impossible 6. This is his time, and the actor says he is ready.

The British public agrees, and bookies have reported a major surge in support for the strapping actor.

The race to replace Daniel Craig started back in 2015, when the clear favourites were Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston and then Tom Hardy. Cavill was considered an outside bet, but all that has changed this year.

He has surged past Elba and another former frontrunner, The Bodyguard and Eternals star Richard madden. In fact, more bets were placed on Cavill last month than any other star, and his latest comments on the Graham Norton Show last night will only fuel hopes that he will be the next Bond.

Cavill has been the gift that keeps recently. Firstly, fans don’t have long to wait until The Witcher Season 2 debuts on Netflix on December 17.

Last week he also confirmed he has finished filming for the sequel to the smash hit Sherlock Holmes spin-off with Millie Bobbie Brown. And then, last night he confirmed his hopes for taking over as James Bond, during a chat with Graham Norton.

He was asked about reports he was a front-runner to replace Daniel Craig, and to follow up on comments he made last year when he said: “If Barbara [Bond producer Barbara Broccoli] and Mike [co-producer Michael G Wilson] were interested in that, I would absolutely jump at the opportunity.

“At this stage, it’s all up in the air. We’ll see what happens. But yes, I would love to play Bond, it would be very, very exciting.”

Since then Craig’s final outing as 007 in No Time To Die has coem and gone.

So, has Cavill been in touch with Broccoli and Wilson?

Cavill said on TV last night:  “I would definitely have a conversation. From what I understand, there are very early conversations happening at the top, but there is no list as such.”

The star’s chances have jumped to odds of 6/1 with Ladbrokes, putting him level with Grantchester’s James Norton and Umbrella Academy actor Tom Hopper.

There are still two long-standing frontrunners in the way, however.

Ladbrokes told Express Online: “Rege-Jean Page and Tom Hardy may head the betting as things stand, but given the interest we’ve seen in Henry Cavill over the last few weeks. We wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest to see him climb even further up the betting.”

The Bridgerton hunk and Venom star Hardy are currently tied at the front on 4/1, but neither have the existing relationship with the Bond producers that Cavill has. The upcoming Witcher and Enola Holmes project will only raise his profile higher. On top of that, he is confirmed to headline a new high-profile reboot of the Highlander saga.
