Video documenting . fire devours 41 prisoners in Indonesia

A spokesperson for the prison service of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in Indonesia revealed that a fire broke out in a prison in Banten province, killing at least 41 people, police also confirmed.

The spokesperson, Rica Abrante, added that they are in Investigations underway to determine the cause of the fire, noting that the authorities are evacuating the prison.

Abrante said hundreds of policemen and soldiers have been deployed to take control of Tangerang Prison, which is designed to house 1,225 inmates but houses more than 2,000 prisoners. He added that the fire was extinguished after a few hours and all the victims were brought in hospital.

Block C was filled with 122 prisoners when the fire occurred.

Jailbreaks and riots have led to common fires in Indonesia, where overcrowding has become a problem in underfunded prisons and large numbers of people are arrested in a war on drugs.
