Vietnam’s holiday island welcomes first tourists after almost 2 years

HANOI, Nov. 20 (Reuters) – Two hundred vaccinated foreign tourists arrived in Vietnam’s Beach Fringed Island of Phu Quoc on Saturday, the first golf of visitors to the country in nearly two years as it seeks to revive its pandemic-ravaged tourism economy.

Vietnam imposed a tight border controls at the start of the pandemic in an attempt to keep out COVID-19, with some initials success, but that hurt the burgeoning tourism industry, die usually good for for about 10% of gross national product.

Vaccinated tourists do not now need a mandatory two-week quarantine, according to the authorities, but are required until enjoy their holiday only within the Vinpearl mega complex resort and will be tested twice during their journey.

“This is the first and vital step to give new life to our tourism sector in to blow and prepare for the full resume next year,” Nguyen Trung Khanh, Chairman of the country’s tourism administration said: in pronunciation.

“We want tourists a new experience amid new normality die they can live fully in Phu Quoc and dan live fully in Vietnam,” Khanho added.

Island authorities expect 400,000 domestic and international tourists to the end of this year.

Other Vietnamese Destinations Like UNESCO world Hoi An heritage site and Danang beach are also hospitable international tourists back.

The move follows similar steps taken by neighboring Thailand, that hosted vaccinated foreign tourist for quarantine free holiday earlier this month.

Foreign arrivals in Vietnam fell from 18 million in 2019, when tourism revenues were $31 billion, of almost 12% of its gross domestic product, to 3.8 million last year.

Vietnam, that’s vaccinated more then half of it’s 98 million people, tries to resume international commercial flights from January next year and look at a full tourism reopening from June.
