Vladimir Somotka Injury Report: Buffalo Shaber Prompts Indefinitely After Knee Surgery

Buffalo Sabers forward Vladimir Sobotka will stay indefinitely after undergoing right knee surgery, the team announced Wednesday.

The 32-year-old had initially been reported to have stopped between four to six weeks after being injured on November 8, but Buffalo said in a statement that the surgery was considered “the right next step” in Sobotka’s recovery.

Sobotka’s injury came as he was followed by a free-kick in the offensive zone when Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov hit a low bridge, sending Sobotka over his back and onto the ice. Sobotka stayed down while the trainers came to tend to his injuries and help him in the closet.

Buffalo announced later that Sobotka would not finish the rest of the contest.

Kuserov received no penalty for the game, nor did he receive further discipline from the NHL Player Safety Division.

Rule 44 of the NHL’s official rule book defines illegal “low blow” as “control delivered by a player who may or may not have both roller skates on ice, with the sole intention of controlling the opponent on his knee area.” “The Rules state that a player cannot” lower his body position “to control his opponent ‘s knees.

In 15 games with the Sabers so far this season, Sobotka has recorded one goal and three points. He has also won 55.22 percent of his face, which ranks first among the skaters who have received at least 20 faceoffs.

Buffalo reminded Curtis Lazar of his Americans joining the Rochester AHL to complete Sobotka. He made his team debut on Thursday in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
