Vs. Michigan Ohio State: Why is game play at noon?

Michigan vs. Ohio State.

It’s a historic competition and this year “The Game” is between the No. 1 team in the country and the No. 12 in the country. It has everything from a football championship to checking the timetable to see what time it starts and is . noon?

If you are a big college football student, you know that noon is usually when all the bad games are played. Rarely do you see two high-profile opponents face so early in the day. So why is this game different? Well, that’s always been the case.

Maybe “always” is a little bit. Fans may remember the “Game of the Century” in 2006 between these two schools played at 3:30 pm Instead. People at Eleven Warriors also made a handy chart in 2014, showing the launch times for The Game throughout its history, and even though it wasn’t always straight at 12pm, the matchup is almost always played afternoon.

From the analysis of the eleven warriors:

“The midday robberies in this series didn’t do anything until the mid-1980s, and then we’ll quickly see a steady midday run begins every year in the 90s and every year but four since 1990.”

There is no real reason why it is noon, except for tradition. There were discussions in 2016 about changing the kickoff time of the year to 3:30 pm, and Martin Jarmond, who was behind Ohio State’s programming, told Cleveland.com he didn’t see the time start will change soon.

“I think tradition and having it at noon, I think fans like that and I know we like it and can rely on it,” Jarmond said. “I can’t see that changing. I really believe that it is locked in at noon in this early period and that is what people have arrived for.

“It’s been that way for a long time, so if it’s not broken, don’t fix it, that’s how I see it.”

While there is no immediate proof of this, another part of the reason may be that teams in the North typically play previous games. The weather definitely plays a factor in this as well as the fact that it is getting really cold in the North this time of year.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said so much at Cleveland.com in 2014.

“I wasn’t asked to play it at night,” Smith said. “But if I were, it would be very difficult to think that I would agree to do that, mainly because of the time of year.”

So here’s the thing: tradition, history and maybe even the weather make it so “play” it’s noon.
